Environmental protection at da Heim Guesthouse
Anyone who enjoys traveling and exploring foreign countries will sooner or later come into contact with the topic of environmental protection and sustainable tourism. South Africa is one of the most popular African vacation destinations for tourists from all over the world. This makes it all the more important for guests to rethink their consumer behavior and adapt it to local conditions and needs. As a 4-star guest house in Cape Town, we would also like to do our part locally, which is why the use of renewable energy, waste separation and, in particular, the conscious use of water are important aspects of our everyday life.
Sustainable electricity from solar energy – produced at da Heim Guesthouse
With 3,700 hours of sunshine a year, Cape Town not only offers the perfect vacation weather, but the bright blue sky also promises the best conditions for sustainable electricity production from solar energy. The solar panels installed on the roof of the guest house can cover almost the entire electricity consumption of the guest house.
Two additional solar thermal systems are also used to produce hot water and heat the pool.
We have installed an “upgrade” and are now almost independent of restrictions in the electricity or water supply. We have been operating our own well and water treatment system since 2018, providing potable water throughout the main house.
In addition to the existing solar system for the supply of hot water and electrical energy, we have now installed a battery backup system. We therefore guarantee the provision of electricity during your entire stay, even if there are phases of “loadshedding” again. Wifi, lights, washing machine etc. will then continue to work, and the garage door will also be able to be opened.
Waste separation at da Heim Guesthouse
Responsible waste management is also part of sustainable tourism. Waste separation and recycling are still issues in Cape Town that do not get the attention they need everywhere. To ensure that no waste ends up in landfill and resources are conserved, waste is naturally separated at da Heim Guesthouse. Raw materials such as paper, plastic and glass bottles are disposed of separately and can thus become part of the resource cycle again.
Saving water at the da Heim Guesthouse
We therefore use a water-saving supply system in the da Heim guesthouse, use groundwater for the basic supply and have installed an elaborate water filter system in order to meet all requirements in terms of both water quality and environmental protection. The treated water is of very good quality!
What can our guests do to help protect the environment?
As is so often the case, it is the individual who makes the difference. We therefore ask our guests to be aware of their water consumption.
Don’t leave the water running unnecessarily when brushing your teeth.
Only turn on the washing machine and dishwasher when they are really full.
Thank you for your help,
your da Heim Guesthouse Team
